I’m not a morning person. Anyone who has lived with me can attest to that. Amanda used to think I was mad at her every morning when we lived together. I tried to explain to her that that was just my normal sunny disposition shinning through and that it had nothing to do with her.
With that being said I’ve always done my personal bible study at any time during the day, BUT morning. I did afternoons when I was in college cause I was in college and I had jack crap else to do…besides take naps. Oh how I miss those days. Now that I have to work for a living I do my bible study at night. This generally works well for me, but of course evenings can get busy and that will easily lead to no study time. Recently I’ve wanted to become a morning bible studier. I want to fill myself up with the Word before I go out and face the day. The only problem is that I can’t seem to make myself wake up early and do it.
So here’s my question…does anyone have any pointers for how I can get my lazy butt outta bed in the morning? When do yall do your bible studies? Or could you care less about studying the bible:)? Ok, that’s more like three questions.
Help a sista out here!

Mine (these days) has to be done after Tyler goes to bed because I have the same problem you have in the mornings. However, I much prefer a morning Bible study time. See, at night, it is sometimes all I can do to keep my eyes open, and I wind up just telling God that I can’t focus and I have to ask for forgiveness and then I pray for a while before I go to sleep. It’s been more or less a mess since an infant rocked my world, but I figure that God wants me in His word every chance I get, in any amount of time available. So, one day, I’ll go back to the mornings on my patio with a cup of hot tea. Until then, I have p.j. quiet times under the covers.
Which, by the way, led me to the C.S. Lewis quote you mentioned in your blog the other day. I couldn’t believe it. I had just read your post, and then there it was in my Beth Moore book during my study time! So crazy!
By the way, Check out my blog…you’ve been tagged! I think you did this one recently, so don’t feel obligated to do it again!

Coffee. Does it for me.
My wife has always had to get up at 5:30am to get to work by 7am, and even though my previous job rarely required me to be there before 8:30am or 9am, I still got up at 5:30am with her just to spend a little time together in the morning and get stuff done before work.
Now I work from home, but I still get up with her at 5:30am. Even if I pull a late night editing session til 3am or something, I get up with her. My son doesn’t even wake up until 9am on most days. But the main thing is keeping it consistent, and I think that makes the biggest difference.
We’re creatures of habit, good habits and bad. I’ve found the same thing out with exercising…if I can get into a daily exercise routine at a certain time of day, after a few weeks it totally throws my mind if I can’t keep my “schedule.” I just get used to it, and don’t want to change.
With getting up early with my wife and exercising, there are the pros (spending time and being healthy, respectively) and the cons (less sleep than absolutely possible and time lost during the day, respectively).
Sooooo….basically, if you want to do it, just find ways to make yourself do it for a few weeks. If you can be consistent in your routine, it will stick and you’ll be in good.
I’m not much of a morning person either. I just read something that said people are at their most creative on average around 10pm to 12am…I’ve known that for years, what with the last minute essays written in school to exam cramming in college and now in the working world. So maybe nobody has any business being up in the morning anyway, just to take away from our most creative hours.

i’m totally a night studier. tivo has done wonders for my god time. i put the kids in bed, wash dishes and get ready for the next day, and then study/pray/read/journal away typically between 9 and 10 at night. is it obvious i have no life? it works for me because i don’t have to worry about kids waking up before i’m done, and i’m awake. in the mornings, though, i do a quick recap of what i studied the night before. maybe it’s a verse i wanted to focus on that day, or a specific passage in a book, or whatever…i make sure to mark something that i can look at in the morning to help me bring to mind the previous night. i don’t do mornings, either.

i love my sleep too. the only tricks i had to get me out of bed on time was to move my alarm across the room so that i had to get out of bed to even press snooze. and coffee. that helps after the fact.
